Robert Amaya was a classically trained vocalist performing in theater when a friend told him that Sherwood Baptist was looking for a Hispanic dad for their movie Courageous. Robert immediately sent off a headshot and resume. Then he got a call from Terri Catt letting him know that they had pretty much decided on another actor for that role. Robert understood and would have gone on with his life, but she kept on talking to him, and talking, and talking. Then finally she said if only they’d had a video of him. So he asked for lines. She sent him the Snake King scene, and well, the rest is history.

Courageous was such a great experience for me where I got to spend time with those guys,” said Robert. “They showed me it wasn’t just a script, it was a biblical lifestyle. It changed my life.” He said his wife sent him off to do an acting job and he came back a better husband and father. Robert enjoyed playing Javier. “Javier was my dad. I always felt like I was playing my dad.”

Robert’s role in Courageous  led to numerous other acting gigs including the role of Marco in the upcoming Mom’s Night Out. “Marco is very much like me,” said Robert. “Except I’m not afraid of children.” He loved doing comedy with such a talented cast. “One of the greatest things about comedy is you get to feed off each other. What you get on film, is much more than the script. The script was more a guideline.”

Fans of Robert will have many more opportunities to see him on the big screen. His upcoming movies include Long Way Off, a modern day retelling of the prodigal son, Unlimited where he runs a Mexican orphanage, and Altar Egos where he plays the lead character, Pastor John. He’s excited because last Mother’s Day he wanted to take his family to see a movie, and there was nothing playing that was suitable. This year, Mom’s Night Out will be releasing in theaters Mother’s Day weekend.  “I heard someone say, ‘If Robert Amaya is in a movie, we know we can take the family.’ I love being a part of family films.”

In addition to seeing Robert on the big screen, this May fans will also get to enjoy his music. Robert is releasing his first praise and worship album. Maybe someday he will be able to combine his music and drama and perform in a musical. “I would love to be in a musical,” said Robert.
