Jenni Beaver – College Student, Radio Host, Filmmaker

I first discovered Jenni Beaver when her mom, a high school classmate of mine, posted her picture buying  a copy of Flowers for Fannie at their local Iowa bookstore. I have enjoyed following On A Positive Note, her radio show, and  viewing her short film projects and was blessed to meet her in person when she was in town covering the KLove Awards. I’m pleased to say she’s as delightful in person as she is online.

What led to your decision to major in mass communications?

It’s kind of an interesting story. When I went on my first college visit to Morningside, I went as a future mass communications major, but when I started school I was actually majoring in Biology and Chemistry. I discovered just a few weeks into the semester that I absolutely hate Chemistry, and that led to me feeling really disappointed and weighed down by my choice of major. I was stressed out about everything and I was searching for some kind of relief. After praying for help just to get through the semester, I felt God urging me to visit the mass communications department one more time. I scheduled my appointment and when I walked into the offices, I was approached by the head of the radio station who proceeded to tell me all about what the radio could offer me. From that moment I knew I couldn’t turn back to the science department, because the mass communications department was where I belonged.

Tell us about your radio show.

My radio show is how my family’s media company was born. It started out as a weekly show on which I played Christian music, but just a few weeks after starting the show I was asked by the head of the station if I could do a Sunday morning show, just to get people ready for church. From that moment on it has just become this fun and exciting thing to do every week. I love getting to share God’s Word through the radio and uplift people with awesome Christian music. It makes me smile just thinking about it.
It was also, as I said in the beginning, the gateway to On A Positive Note Media. Had I not started that radio show, the company wouldn’t exist, and I thank God every day for that first show in October of 2013. It has truly changed my life forever.

How did you land your own radio show as a freshman?

At Morningside College anyone can do a radio show, even if you’re not a mass communications major.  So, after the recommendation of the radio station head, I signed up for a slot. It started as Thursdays from 5-6 and then we added Sunday morning from 8-10, and I can’t wait to see where it goes in the future.
Tell us about your experience covering KLove Fan Awards.

The only word I can find to explain the experience is unbelievable. I was able to go as a regular guest but also as media, so I had access to a few extra areas than those with regular guest passes. I was able to get short radio clips from a lot of incredible singers, and I was also able to meet great KLOVE DJs and those who work behind the scenes. It really was just a spectacular experience that I will cherish forever, and it also was the true start of On A Positive Note Media. My mom and I went to Nashville with three missions – spread the word about the company, connect more with God, and just have a great time. I believe we accomplished all of those.

What film projects have you been a part of?

All of the film projects I have been a part of are my own. I took a video production class this past spring and was able to really dive head first into all areas of film. I had to learn to work with the cameras, editing software, scripts, directing, and more. I see a lot more On A Positive Note Media and All Things Possible Films productions coming in the near future.
Which do you prefer – radio or film? Why?

This is a tough question. I think I am going to go with film. I always feel free to express creativity when I’m working with films. I can play around with the script and try new things with writing. I can experiment with editing after the film is completed. It really is a blank canvas and it’s up to me to fill it with an amazing film.

What are your plans for the future?

My number one plan is to finish college and hopefully move to Nashville to pursue all avenues of media. With On A Positive Note Media my family wants to take radio to a whole new level and really bring uplifting and positive entertainment to everyone, no matter what they believe and where they are. The On A Positive Note Magazine will be published on our website this fall and that is definitely one area that we are very excited about (I put more information below). I would love to make longer films with All Things Possible Films and take those to a new market other than YouTube. Overall, my biggest plan is to take what God has given me in On A Positive Note Media and share it with anyone who is willing to listen. It’s going to be a wild ride, but I know everyone in the company is ready to buckle up and hold on. We just can’t wait to see what God has in store.

Web Magazine:
When I started college I began an internship with a local magazine, and it was my first taste of journalism. However, about six months after I started the internship, I was let go because of my religious beliefs. I was extremely disappointed, but my mom made the decision that day that if a secular magazine didn’t want a Christian’s beliefs, then we would make our own magazine. It was from there that we started connecting the dots with radio, film, web, magazine, and each different media section, and thus, On A Positive Note Media was created.

  1. You are awesome! Thank you for following God’s plan and being a role model for other young people. My son will begin his journey at a Christian university this fall. He is seeking God’s will and purpose for his life, too. I will be praying for you.
