I love romance movies, chick flicks, and sappy dramas. But I realize that those are not first choice on my husband’s watch list. He wants something with a little action, or comedy, or cool cars. Chances are, if you’re married, you’ve run into the same dilemma. So I’ve put together a list of five movies that offer entertainment for both men and women.

Beyond the Mask is the story of Will Reynolds, the leading mercenary for the British East India Company, who has just been double-crossed and now is on the run in the American Colonies. It’s a period movie with beautiful costumes and a romantic storyline for the ladies, interspersed with intense, action-packed scenes for the guys. This is a top notch production guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Beyond the Mask is available for rent at Amazon and Christian Cinema.

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone is an inspirational comedy  about faith and forgiveness. Gavin Stone, a washed-up former child star, is forced to do community service at a local mega-church and pretends to be Christian so he can land the part of Jesus in their annual Passion Play. This is a fun movie for anyone who’s grown up in the church. The characters are rich and relatable and true to life. The Resurrection of Gavin Stone is available for rent at Amazon.

Rogue Saints is a comedy about childhood friends Nick and Dylan who plot to dig up a buried diamond under a church. To disguise their efforts, they volunteer for work at the church. This is a light hearted movie that can be enjoyed by the entire family. It’s available on Amazon Prime .

Victor is an adaptation of Victor Torres’ autobiography entitled Son of Evil Street.  The film tells the story of Victor and his family, Puerto Rico immigrants in the 1960’s.  Victor becomes a victim of gang life, and he soon finds himself enthroned by heroin and struggling with the faith that could save his life. Victor is darker than the other movies on my list, but is beautifully shot with great costumes and cars, and does a great job of capturing inner city struggles in the sixties. Victor can be watched on Netflix and Christian Cinema.

Mom’s Night Out is one of my all time favorite movies. It’s the story of four moms who are stressed to the max and in need of a break. All stages and sizes of family are represented. The movie captures not only the struggles for young moms with  toddlers, but the anxieties facing moms of all ages.  And while the focus is on the women, the men are pretty funny, too. I got to watch this in an early screening and there was laughter literally lasting throughout the entire movie. Anyone who’s a mom, has a mom, or knows a mom, can appreciate this comedy. Mom’s Night Out is available at Amazon.

Bonus Plug – If you’re looking for something a little different, may I suggest my own movie, Providence. It’s an artistic film that follows childhood friends Rachel and Mitchel as their paths keep crossing, but it takes forty years before their friendship truly blooms into romance. It’s told silent cinema style (like a music video) with beautiful cinematography and a powerful soundtrack. Although  Providence is a love story,  it includes plenty of vintage cars to keep the guys entertained. It’s available at Christian Cinema.
