Getting Up From Being Down – Book Review

Guest Post By Rev. Clay Herd

Getting Up From Being Down is a book by Dr. S. Todd Townsend. With him being a pastor, educator, and rap hip hop artist, I didn’t really know what to expect when I picked it up.

I will admit my hesitation in this book. From the cover it looks very plain. It is styled like your typical self-help book with a white background accented by another color. There really wasn’t anything extraordinary about the cover of this book. I think honestly, if I was looking in the book store, this book would not have caught my eye.

I may have never picked this book up on my own, but I am so glad I did. Being in a period of my life where my wife and I are waiting on a promise from God we have been seeking in our ministry for two years, I came to this book feeling a little discouraged. Right away, this book began by breaking my personal pride down. The book ties Christ’s life into the narrative and shows how even Christ got back up from being down after he was crucified.

Each chapter in this book takes a theme, like getting up from the past and walking the walk. Each of these chapters walks you through the theme and shows through stories that you, too, can go on. While mixing in scripture and stories, Townsend does a good job of showing that no matter your past, no matter your situation with Christ, you, too, can get back up from being down.

If you are dealing with things in your life where you don’t know what you are going to do, this book does a good job of bringing things back to Christ and using the experiences that others have gone through to show that it will be ok. If you can get past some of the cheesy one-liners in this book, Getting Up From Being Down really does do a good job of proving its title.
