Yesterday I said we’d be covering Zeresh today. But then when I started working on her, there was way too much to talk about to try to cover her in a bonus episode. So she’s been promoted to a full episode in January, and today we’ll talk instead about Daughters as Cornerstones.

Daughters as Cornerstones is a symbolic term mentioned once in Psalm 144. The psalm is a poetic praise. David opens by blessing the Lord and going through attributes of God. He talks about God’s power and all He does for His people.

In verse 11 David asks God to rescue him and deliver him from the hands of his enemies.

Then in verse 12 he asks God’s blessing on the family.  “That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace.” Other versions say “pillars carved to adorn a palace” or “corner pillars cut for the structure of a palace”.

So what exactly is a cornerstone or corner pillar? A cornerstone is a foundational element of a structure, it’s a rock that’s placed at the corner of a building, and it’s often a ceremonial addition. In this case, it makes it clear that this is a cornerstone specifically for a palace.

In other words, David is referring to daughters as a foundational element of the family. We’re a rock. That we’re polished like a palace.

How often do we feel like women are regarded as second class citizens, but this passage makes clear that daughters are to be treasured and valued.

Sweet ladies, you are the Lord’s daughters. You are loved and treasured and valued. You are special, created to be appreciated and not abused.

I challenge you to take a moment and read Psalm 144 in full. It’s only 15 verses, so it won’t take long. But it’s a beautiful tribute to the Lord and a reminder of who we are in Him.

Lord God, we love You so very much! Thank You for all the reminders of who You are and all that You do. Open our eyes to the truth of who You are and who we are in You. Fill us with Your love. Prepare our hearts so that we can be all that You designed us to be. Forgive us when we forget and lose sight of the truth. We love You! In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
