Filmmakers’ Journey – Day 2

Today’s journey involved two unexpected incidents. First, we discovered a slow tire leak. Most people would have never noticed, but being ever vigilant, Fred caught it and we agreed it needed to be addressed. So we had a short delay at a Tulsa tire shop.

The other surprise was the Oklahoma turnpike. One minute we were driving along I-44 in Missouri. We crossed the state line and suddenly we were on a pay toll pike. We had to make a choice. Pay the toll or exit and take the more scenic and free Route 66.

Google maps estimates the time to travel from Joplin, Missouri to Oklahoma City to be three hours. It took us six hours. In that time we explored history, shopped antique stores, stopped for photo opps, toured a motorcyle museum, fixed the tire, and ate lunch. We enjoyed roadside attractions and even made a few new friends along the way.

Filmmaking in particular and life general is full of unexpected twists and turns. We have this fool proof plan for getting from point A to point B and then we spring a leak or find ourself with a toll we never saw coming. Then we have to make a decision. Do we ignore the leak and hope it goes away or do we address it before it becomes a major problem? Do we pay the fee and take the quickest route or do we save a few bucks and savor the journey? Guess which option we chose.
