Continuing with our Women of Prayer Simulstudy, today we look at Hagar’s story in context. Let’s look at her backstory. What led to her meeting with God in the wilderness?
Hagar in Scripture
Read Hagar’s backstory in Genesis 12:1–20; 15:1–21
For additional study, read Genesis 17:1–27; 18:1–15
As you read, underline or highlight verses that jump out at you and/or take notes in a journal. Also, as you read, jot down any questions you might want to look up later or that you’d like to discuss with other women.
What questions jumped out at you as you read? Here are some questions to consider.
- How old was Abraham when he brought Sarah and Lot to the Promised Land?
- Why did Pharaoh give livestock and servants to Abraham?
- What idea of God might Hagar have had based on what she witnessed in the life of Abraham and Sarah?

O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.
Pray that God will direct your paths and keep you from making unwise decisions.
