Lois

Lois is perhaps the only woman in the Bible singled out for her role as a godly grandmother.

“I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.” (2 Timothy 1:5)

No mention is made of Timothy’s grandfather, but his grandmother Lois is credited with a strong faith that she passed on to her daughter Eunice and then to her grandson Timothy.

How proud Lois must have been to have her grandson grow into a godly young man, respected by his peers, and chosen by Paul to accompany him and Silas on their missionary journeys. How she must have prayed for him, knowing the dangers they would face on those journeys. How she must have rejoiced when she heard the reports of churches being strengthened in their faith and increasing in number. How she must have feared when she heard Paul and Silas had been imprisoned.

In Paul’s second letter to Timothy he warned him about “those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.” (3:6-7

Fortunately, Timothy had no personal experience with weak women who were led astray. All he knew was a strong mother and grandmother who resisted social pressures to make sure Timothy was well grounded in a godly faith.

May we have a faith like Lois, strong in understanding, with a boldness to pass it on.
