Titus was a Greek Gentile who traveled with Paul, working with Gentile converts in early Christian churches. The book of Titus is Paul’s letter telling him what to teach the new believers. His advice included the responsibility the older women have towards the younger women.
“Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.” Titus 2:3-5
Paul was speaking to new believers. They were still learning what it meant to be a Christian, so Paul taught them the importance of discipleship and mentoring.
Paul knew that if the older women learned and grew, they could then pass on what they learned to the next generation. He knew what a struggle young women were going through with so many unanswered questions. Though they could certainly learn from their husbands, hearing from other women who had undergone the same struggles would have a more powerful impact.
The world’s attempts to isolate the generations, but we need each other. Younger women need the wisdom of older women. Older women need to feel useful and needed. Working together, we can learn from each other and grow in our walk with the Lord.
Whatever your age, I encourage you to join together with other sisters in Christ, praying for one another, listening, and learning in the Lord.
