You’ve read about Hagar. You’ve listened to her story. You know her fairly well. But let’s keep digging a little deeper to see what else we can glean from her story.
Hagar in Scripture
Reread Genesis 16:7–13 and 21:16–19, this time using a different translation of the Bible. If you usually use a traditional version such as King James or English Standard Version, try reading in a modern translation like New Living Translation or Good News Translation. If you first read from a modern translation, read from a traditional version. Note any differences in the terminology.
The Bible is the living Word of God. You can read a passage over and over, and each time it’s like reading each verse anew. You discover details you missed before, see familiar stories in a different light, and understand what previously didn’t make sense. Scripture that seemed unrelated to your life will connect with you in unexpected ways. How exciting it is when that happens.
As we dig deeper, let’s consider “why” questions. This takes you to the next level of study as you get past the obvious and ponder the subtleties.
- Why did God seek Hagar?
- What promise did God give Hagar?
- Why did Hagar obey God?
- Why did God send Hagar back the first time but not the second time?

Every time you see your memory verse card, read the passage aloud.
O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.
Thank God for being El Roi, the God who sees. Thank Him for seeing you wherever you are.
