As busy as I’ve been with the release of The Amazing Crab Alley Revival, I haven’t had a lot of time for reviewing or interviewing but how could I turn down an opportunity to interview author Rhonda Stoppe and talk about her book Moms of the Bible?

The subtitle Moms of the Bible is “Life-Changing Lessons from the Fearless, Flawed, and Faithful.” Isn’t that a wonderful description of motherhood?

I’ve read many women of the Bible books, but I’ve never seen one quite like Moms of the Bible. It’s conversational, authentic, and just like sitting down to a cup of tea, one mother to another. If you’re looking for an encouraging, Bible-based read, you’ll want to check it out.

Interview With Rhonda Stoppe

What is the story behind your message of No Regrets?

In more than 40 years of ministry, I have met countless women who are stuck in regret. For some, the regret is over how they were treated as children, betrayed by a spouse, or disappointed by a painful life event. I have also met women who are burdened by regret over choices they have made or opportunities they let slip by. Regret steals our joy and can keep us stuck.

In the parable of the man who built his house upon the sand, Jesus so clearly shows us that a life built on sand will crumble and fall into regret. But He also offers great hope to anyone who chooses to build their house upon the rock of our Lord and Savior. The way to break free from regret is to lay it at the foot of the cross. Repentance for our sin and sweet surrender to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior are the beginning of a no-regrets life. All of our regrets wash away under His blessed forgiveness.

In the appendix of all my books, I include “How to Have a Relationship with Jesus” because I know that in Christ alone our hope is found—hope for a life without regrets. And for those who are followers of Christ but are still stuck in regret, they can break free when they take those regrets to the Lord. My book Moms of the Bible unpacks real stories of women with regret and offers real hope and practical ways to break free.

Tell us about your podcast Old Ladies Know Stuff.

Titus 2 calls older women to teach younger women how to love their husbands and children. I know the wife and mother I was before God introduced me to godly mentors. The relationships I have with those women transformed me and taught me how to live out my faith in a way that my children would want to follow Christ. They also showed me how to build a marriage that my children would one day grow up to emulate.

Old Ladies Know Stuff is a nod to the Titus 2 woman, as I interview women and unpack great insights for living a life well-lived in Christ.

What is the main message that you think women today need to hear?

You are seen. God is with you. He sees you in your loneliness when your husband doesn’t seem to understand your struggles. He is with you when you’re beating yourself up for not being a better mom. He is the One who will guide your steps, chart your path, and cause all things to work together for good if you press in to knowing Him in a deeper way through the pages of Scripture, prayer and fellowship with other believers who are serious about their walk with Christ.

What inspired you to write Moms of the Bible?
My bestselling book, Moms Raising Sons to Be Men, is divided into three sections, and the first is titled Moms of the Bible. I was intrigued by what I learned as I wrote about a few of the boy-moms in Scripture, and radio talk show hosts were equally intrigued by the topic. So, I began researching other books on Moms of the Bible, and I found that there were no books devoted specifically to mothers in Scripture.

The books I did find that highlighted mothers in the Bible seemed to focus only on the ones who got it right. I felt compelled to take a deeper look at every mom in the Bible—the heroes as well as those who failed. I believe we can learn a great deal from other people’s mistakes if we slow down long enough to unpack their stories, understand what motivated their failures, and consider how, if at all, they recovered from their mistakes.

What do you hope women will get from it?

I hope women will read Moms of the Bible and connect with me on a personal level––like a friend who has walked the path ahead of you. I write the way I speak, as conversationally as I can. I want readers to feel as though they’re sitting in my kitchen across from me, sharing a warm cup of coffee while I share my own life stories and talk with them about all things motherhood.

I always say, “I can write a letter to my younger self, but it does no-one any good.” But if I write that letter in the form of a book and put it into the hands of younger women I want to mentor, then it has the power to influence the next generation with hope and encouragement.

Who is your favorite woman in the Bible?

I have to say that my favorite woman in the Bible when I was a young girl was Esther, because a kids’ camp speaker told her story every night around the campfire. I was captivated by how God could use an ordinary girl in such a courageous way. Esther has always been one of my favorites.

However, as I wrote Moms of the Bible, Naomi surfaced as another favorite. Not because she was such a great mentor to Ruth, but because I was deeply moved by how Naomi endured some of the most tragic losses a woman could experience: the death of her husband, her sons marrying ungodly Moabite women, infertility for both of her sons, and then the death of her boys. How does a woman endure such loss?

But this is what I don’t want you to miss: when Naomi finally had enough, she decided the only place she could take her grievous heart was back to her God and back to her people. And this is when Ruth decided to follow Naomi. This is when Ruth made a covenant with Naomi and the God of Israel.

The point is simply this: “your trial may not be about you.” God uses us in our heartache to be a light to others. Our faith is validated when we turn toward God rather than away from Him. And this broken, bitter, lonely widow’s resolve to return to Yahweh was the final quality that drove Ruth to forsake the gods of Moab and make this covenant, “Your God will be my God. Your people will be my people…”

What is your favorite scripture?

My favorite scripture is Nehemiah 8:10b: “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” Amid enemy slander and threatening attacks, Nehemiah reminds God’s people to fight for joy. What a blessed reminder for us as well. His joy is our strength.

When we walk in joy, even when life doesn’t make sense, the Lord uses our testimony to shine the light of our hope in Christ, drawing others to want to know our Lord—beginning with our own children and grandchildren.

Are you working on a new book?

I’m not working on a new book, although I do have an idea rolling around in the back of my mind. Moms of the Bible is the sixth book I have written for Harvest House Publishers, and, if the Lord wills, I’ll write my next book for them as well. I have the highest respect for Harvest House because they are so committed to publishing only books grounded in sound doctrine. The book tour for Moms of the Bible was extremely busy and wonderful. But I’m planning to take some time to rest and play with my 15 grandchildren before I jump into another project!

I love speaking at women’s events and homeschool conferences, and I also enjoy presenting a night of comedy for women entitled, Old Ladies Know Stuff.
