Dreams Rekindled by Amanda Cabot is Book 2 in the Mesquite Springs series.
When selecting historic fiction books, I lean towards turn of the century, especially those that take place in the southern states. I don’t read many western stories, unless there’s a specific draw for me. Dreams Rekindled by Amanda Cabot had that draw when I saw it involved a newspaper and the impact journalists have on their readers. I accepted the invitation to read and review it, and I’m glad I did.
Dreams Rekindled Review
Dreams Rekindled is the story of Dorothy Clark, an aspiring writer who wants to change the world through her words, and Brandon Holloway, a newspaperman who has seen the devastation caused by his words and now wants to avoid controversy at all cost. Together, they must determine who is working to divide their town. In the end, they discover the healing power of truth.
At first, it took me awhile to get into Dreams Rekindled. I couldn’t figure it out. It was well written. I liked the characters. But I kept feeling like I was missing something. It wasn’t until midway through the book that I realized it was Book 2 in a series. How did I miss that? Once I figured that out, I quit trying to understand the minor characters who obviously had backstories from Book 1 and fully enjoyed the story of Book 2.
What I love the most about Dreams Rekindled is the use of point of view. Not only do we get to see the POV of Dorothy and Brandon, but also Phil, the artist who shows up in town soon before things started happening. Each has issues from their past that tie them down and restrict their future. Understanding their past gives depth to everything they’re dealing with in the present.
I also appreciated the faith elements of Dreams Rekindled. Each character has his/her own personal struggles with God and is seeking the truth from Him. It’s not just tacked on to make it Christian fiction. Their faith is truly a part of their lives.
If you’re a fan of historic fiction, especially western stories, you’ll enjoy the Mesquite Springs series. I recommend you start with Out of the Embers, followed by Dreams Rekindled and we can look forward to the release of Book 3 in the future.
