I love hearing the behind-the-scenes stories of authors, so I’m excited to interview Alena Auguste to help celebrate the release of her debut novel, A Family On His Doorstep. What an encouraging story she has!

Interview With Alena Auguste

When did you first feel the call to be a writer?  / Tell us about your journey to become a published author.

I was sitting in church when a sermon sparked a wild dream, to write Christian romance. I was always an avid reader but never a writer. Yet God’s nudge was clear, and my journey began. It should be easy, right? I mean, I’ve been reading romance novels since I was at least 13. 

I quickly learned that as a working mom of four rambunctious kids, carving out time was difficult. With the support and encouragement of my husband, I dove in. I discovered that one of my favorite authors had an up-and-coming writing community Susan May Warren’s, My Book Therapy (now Novel Academy). At the same time, I subscribed to Steeple Hill (now Love Inspired) monthly book club and devoured their books every month. When I got the dream to write, I was determined to write for them. 

Fifteen years of writing conferences, numerous brainstorming sessions, and rejections tested my faith. Writing isn’t for the faint of heart—it’s a journey of trusting God. He taught me to keep my eyes on Him, not the setbacks. Though every year the dream seemed further away,  I pressed on. 

Through it all I was surrounded by family and friends who cheered me on. And wow, the writing community? Pure gold! I’ve been gifted with friends who have shared my sorrow over rejections and commiserated with each other. We’ve laughed, cried and cheered each other on.

Now here I am fifteen years later, celebrating my debut novel A Family on His Doorstep, proof that God’s plan outshines our wildest dreams. Today, I get to celebrate one of my favorite verses. “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” Ephesians 3:20 NIV

Why romance? Is it what you thought you’d be writing, or did you start off with something else?

I absolutely love a happy ending and I’ve been reading romances since I was at least 13, so romance is the only thing I’ve ever had a desire to write. 

What role does faith play in your writing?

Everything. The dream to write was a wild one. I wasn’t the best at grammatical English in school and honestly, never ever did I think I would write. The whole endeavor has been one of faith. I learned everything from scratch at the young age of 35. Lol.

Who are your favorite authors?

I’ve got so many it’s hard to pick one. When I started writing it was Dee Henderson, Susan May Warren and Lori Wick. Now I’ve expanded to Rachel Hauck, Lindsay Harrel, Tari Faris, Lisa Jordan, Gabrielle Meyer, Melissa Tagg and Beth K. Vogt  – the list goes on and on. These authors provide quality, wholesome, faith filled reads, and I know I will finish them with a happy sigh. 

Do you have any other books in the works?

Yes, I’m working on a novella for my newsletter subscribers. I’m also working on the next sibling in the Greystone family. 

Who’s your favorite woman in the Bible?

By far Esther. She stepped out in faith afraid for her very life and did it anyway. 

What’s your favorite Scripture?

Wow. Hard to pick one. My top three would be

Ephesians 3:20 which was the verse for this book.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
 in all your ways submit to him,
    and he will make your paths straight.”

Hebrews 12:1-2

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
