As the population of the world increased, mankind wandered further and further away from the Lord. Genesis 6:2 tells us, “the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.” Verse 4 explains that when the sons of God married daughters of men, the children they bore were giants, mighty men, men of renown.
If this was all the information we had, we would assume that these daughters of men were to be admired. They had beauty. Men were attracted to them, and they bore sons who were physically strong and admired by the world.
But if we continue reading, we see that “the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” (v.5) It was so bad that “the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.” (v.6)
Every woman longs to be beautiful, to be desirable to men. And what mother doesn’t want her sons to be strong, mighty, and renown? And yet, while the ancient world was celebrating their successes, God was sorrowful of their situation.
It’s easy for us to measure our success by the world’s tools. But God has his own standards.
What kind of wife and mother are you? Are you depending on your physical looks to sustain your marriage or are you focused on being a helpmeet for your husband? Are you raising your children to love the Lord or to impress the world?
As Proverbs 31:30 reminds us, “Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.”
