Sabina movie review

Sabina Tortured for Christ movie is the story of Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand, founders of Voice of the Martyrs.

I’m somewhat obsessed with movies that take place during the 30’s and 40’s, so I was pretty excited to be offered the opportunity to review Sabina, a new movie by Voice of the Martyrs. It’s the story of Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand, Jewish atheists-turned-Christians and founders of Voice of the Martyrs.

Sabina: Tortured for Christ

Sabina Tortured for Christ

So many Christian movies feel small. I get it. We made our fair share of small movies. Sabina Tortured for Christ, on the other hand, feels big. It opens with dramatic sets, broad shots, fancy vehicles, and beautiful wardrobe. The cinematography is spectacular.

John Grooters did a great job of bringing to life the story of Sabina and Richard. I love the flow of the story, the back and forth with the Russian soldiers, and the narrative techniques. So often with movies like this the story gets convoluted, with scenes bouncing around aimlessly.

It’s easy to get confused. That’s not the case with Sabina. Every scene leads into the next scene. Every scene is there for a reason. I think it works having one person writing, directing, and editing. He knew the vision he was going after, and he captured it. Though the story could have felt dark and depressing, the tone of the movie is inspiring and uplifting.

It was the beauty of the filmmaking that first attracted me to Sabina, but it’s the haunting testimony of Richard and Sabina that lingers with me. I can’t stop thinking of what they endured and how they endured it. It convicts me to reevaluate my own life and attitude and seek to live my life in a more loving manner.

Sabina Tortured for Christ is a story that needs to be told, and the timing couldn’t be better. It’s a powerful story that will encourage you in the days ahead.

  1. I read her story and was deeply moved. I am so glad it is now a movie to reach more people with her life story.

  2. It’s a wonderful movie! It doesn’t cover her entire life, of course, but it does a great job of showing how she reached the point of forgiveness and compassion for others.
