Many years ago, when our daughter was little, I taught children’s church. For three years, every Sunday during the school year, I led worship services for preschoolers and young elementary students.

My goal was to provide a strong biblical foundation for these children, many of whom came as part of the bus ministry and had no prior knowledge of the Bible. My greatest struggle was finding resources to use. I was always on the lookout for Bible-based books that appealed to an audience of young children with short attention spans. Hey-O! Stories of the Bible would have fit the bill precisely.

Book Features

Hey-O! Stories of the Bible is a colorful Bible story book for young children. It comes from Saddleback Church and is based on their children’s programming. It features 67 Bible stories told in an easy-to-understand style. A QR code at the beginning of the book links to videos from Saddleback Kids that accompany each story.

The book is a thick hardback with bold and colorful illustrations. The text is simple yet engaging. It’s written as a read-aloud rather than for children to read on their own.

Book Review

Hey-O! Stories of the Bible is designed to be used by parents, teachers, or other church leaders who are wanting to teach Bible stories to children. The book is sturdy enough to be held in one hand for reading to a large group, and the pictures are bold enough to be seen from a distance.

The stories range in length from 3-9 pages, with most of them in the 7-8 page range. They’re a good length for short attention spans, and with the engaging illustrations, the children will have plenty to look at while the words are being read.

I can imagine parents reading a story a night for a bedtime story. It would also work well for Sunday School or children’s church leaders.

As a nontechy grandmother, I found the idea of trying to read the book and watch the videos at the same time a little overkill. However, the videos would be fun on their own, not trying to do them at the same time. If I were still teaching, I would use the videos to supplement the book.

Hey-O! Stories of the Bible is an excellent resource for anyone wishing to instill a love of the Bible in young children. It introduces the stories in a way that lends itself well to additional discussion and study.
