Charles Spurgeon is a popular name among Bible scholars I have friends who quote him on a regular basis, so when I saw Spurgeon and the Gospels, I was intrigued.
It’s a thin book, simply set up, easy to read. As I perused the contents, I began to understand why this 19th century preacher is still so popular today.

Bible Review
Though Spurgeon and the Gospels is classified as a Bible, it’s really more of a devotional book that includes the entire text of the gospel books.
The setup is simple. Each Scripture chapter is partnered with commentary from Spurgeon that introduces that chapter. The passages are between 250-300 words each.
Matthew opens with the genealogy of Jesus. Spurgeon explains in simple language why genealogy is important and what we can learn from it. From that first reading, I was hooked. I flipped to Luke so I could read about the chapter we’re studying in my home Bible study. Each chapter I checked out provided new and valuable insight.
I’d planned to gift this book to my son-in-law once I reviewed it, but now I’m having second thoughts. I don’t want to give up my copy. I may have to get him his own.
If you’re looking for a Christmas gift for a preacher or anyone who enjoys Bible study, I’d highly recommend Spurgeon and the Gospels. There’s also Spurgeon and the Psalms available, so you can make it a gift set.
